When will Intel?s Many Integrated Core processors be mainstream?

I?m at Intel?s software tools conference in Dubrovnik, which I have attended for the last three years, and as usual the big topic is concurrent programming and how to write code that takes advantage of the multiple cores in today?s computers.

Microsoft releases IE10 preview, talks up native HTML5

Microsoft has released an early preview of Internet Explorer 10, which you can download now. It shows the company?s commitment ? for the moment ? to an energetic release cycle for its web browser.

Why use IE? Microsoft is pushing the notion that only IE is truly native on Windows:

Windows Multi Point 2011 and How it Fits into Your Small Business

I?ve talked about Multi-Point before, and I mentioned it in my presentation at SMBNation in Las Vegas at the end of last year, but yet I still get the questions about education only, or can we use it in business?

image

Well, it?s true that the current version of Multi-Point, 2010 that?s available today is out in the field for education only (or at least it?s hard to get or manage if you?re not in education).  If you?re in the market for it, because you like the idea of a single computer and multiple users, there were two major problems.  The OEM edition was non-domain joinable, and only supported 10 users.  The Academic version was only via volume licensing to qualified people, and supported 20 users and the beloved domain-join functionality.  So really, if you wanted something useful, really do have to be in the education field to even get your hands on it.

Also, there are some features that are good for education, but kind of confuse users outside in the working world, like if you put a thumb-drive into one of the USB ports at a workstation, it appears to all the work stations.  Good for education, not so great for business.

Well, if you wrote off Multi-Point 2010 for business, you probably haven?t been paying attention to the new Multi-Point 2011, currently in Beta (obtain it here)

image

With Windows MultiPoint Server 2011, the licensing and purchase model has been simplified.  There are still two versions as before, with similar restrictions:

  • Windows MultiPoint 2011 Standard ? still cannot join a domain and still has a max of 10 work stations
  • Windows MultiPoint 2011 Premium ? CAN join a domain as before and can have up to 20 workstations

The most important piece of information to note in the SMB space, is that BOTH of these MultiPoint editions are offered in multiple Microsoft licensing channels.  So now you don?t have to be a large school to actually purchase the more useful edition of MultiPoint.

What?s better, is that USB issue mentioned above is fixed, a USB thumb-drive only appears to the session its plugged into, and not all the users on the server.

Additionally, the 2011 version of WMS has support for thin clients.  Here is where I think the big win for Small Business lives.  If you have 12 XP workstations, you can simply obtain 1 copy of MultiPoint Premium and now each of those XP workstations have another 5 years of life but yet, they get a full Windows 7 experience when used as a WMS workstation over the network.

What??

Yeah, that?s what.  WMS is essentially a turnkey TS server on steroids.  You can TS to it, or you can plug in USB based workstations, or use OS down-level desktops.  I?ve even seen old useless Linux based laptops, that have support for RDP be instantly turned into a powerful Windows 7 workstation.

If you?re a VAP, selling it should be a breeze.  Just show the business owner the console where you can get a thumbnail of each individual workstation.  Business owners will love that they can snoop on their employees desktops for when they are using Facebook, or other non-productive functionality, or even to just confirm employee behavior.

Thumbnail View of Desktops

You can really tell that the Windows MultiPoint Server, and the Windows Small Business Server teams share the same floor in Building 43 at Microsoft, our consoles look similar.  Sadly, they do not completely integrate for this release.

I?ve installed WMS into my SBS 2011 Essentials (Aurora) network and it works great.  I haven?t tried on an SBS 2011 Standard network, but there is nothing to prevent it from not working.  I?m seriously considering having the standard version run at my house for when guests arrive and want to use a computer.  Even John Zajdler has tried it in his Aurora Network?

If you haven?t tried it yet, and it?s interesting to you get on it because the release candidate is already out.. which has gotta mean it?s close, right?

How long is your measuring stick?

I received an email from Salesforce.com earlier this week that proudly proclaimed there are now 1 billion lines of APEX code running in production. I was immediately struck by that staggering number, but not in an awe-inspired "Wow, that platform is amazing!" sort of way, but instead in a "They must be joking!" sort of way. :-) Big numbers get attention, particularly at Salesforce. I can understand why the Force team feels the need to put up some big numbers: last year's acquisition of Ruby on Rails PaaS startup Heroku for an extremely high multiple of revenue has to have shaken the Force.com team's confidence. The deal delivered some very clear messages:
  • Force was not performing to expectations
  • Salesforce felt the need to plot a new future
  • Large, meaningless numbers mesmerize the Salesforce management
It seems as though the Force.com team decided to join in with it's own large but meaningless number! Reading the blog post and applying some simple arithmetic begs a few questions:
  • 8 million tests.That sounds impressive, but...
  • 125 LOC/test is quite low by modern standards.
  • Do the BILLION lines of APEX code represent just customer applications?
  • With more than a MILLION lines per day average (2 million a day now, assuming linear growth), why buy Heroku?
Clearly, something is fishy. Given that demand for APEX programmers is about 1/3 that of Ruby developers, you'd think that there would be three times as much code being written in Ruby as APEX. Yet I'm confident that Ruby developers are writing a lot less code and getting a lot more done. That's what I call a win/win situation! :-) Let me state this clearly:lines of code is a generally meaningless metric.Given that, few will argue that higher line counts are better than lower! You don't have to take my word on this: if you want to see into the future, check out the incredible work Alan Kay and his colleagues are doing at Viewpoints Research Institute by readingtheir 2010 summary. They're working on building an entirely new operating system, including productivity software, in just a few tens of thousands of lines of code! One of the undeniable truths of publishing a competitive metric is that it needs to be unassailable. After all, once you choose to bloviate about a billion lines of code, it'd be highly embarrassing if a competitor quickly bested the number. With this in mind, I suspect that Force.com made a very wise choice in making lines of code their number. Who else is going to compete against a metric which, rather than being heralded, better belongs in the development hall of shame? P.S. I also found it highly amusing that the press release states that APEX is a language for the cloud since it's multi-tenanted, and there are now just 16 ways (down from 70!) that your application can be "governor throttled." That is one of the most ridiculous bits of spin I've ever heard! I've already commented on SFDC's fascination with multi-tenancy; this is yet another reason that multi-tenant environments are not well suited tomission critical applications.

The Open Source Hardware Logo

open source hardware logo

Following the public vote announced several weeks ago, the design above by Macklin Chaffe was selected as the v 1.0 logo for Open Source Hardware. We hope that this will, in time, become a recognizable mark indicating open source hardware projects and products.

Part of what will help to spur adoption is making the design available in a variety of formats, ready for use in different contexts. Already, we've seen versions in OpenSCAD (for 3D fabrication) and KiCad (for circuit board design).

To those examples, we're adding our own: the OSHW logo, ready to use in gEDA PCB, our favorite software for circuit board design.

open source hardware logo

Here's how the logo might look on a printed circuit board, as rendered in gEDA PCB.

We've also rendered it in a few sizes and styles-- filled or not, and losing the text as the logos get smaller. You can download this set of examples for gEDA right here ( 82 kB .zip archive).

EY Training Provider Program is here!

Last April, we announced Engine Yard University, and the first revision of our Zero to Rails 3 class. One year later, we are taking our game to the next level with the launch of our EY Training Provider (EYTP) Program. Through this initiative, school teachers, instructors, developers, managers, and entrepreneurs can work together to improve their curriculum, and lead classes with meaningful and direct support from Engine Yard. Standing beside us on launch day are some of the most well known names in Ruby and Rails training. These include:
  • Blazing Cloud: Sarah Allen's Ruby consulting and training company here in San Francisco
  • Chariot Solutions: a leading Java Open & SOA organization embracing JRuby, Ruby and Rails
  • Envy Labs / Code School: the guys behind Rails for Zombies
  • Thoughtbot: our partners in Boston, famous for hiring the best and brightest, and makers of Hoptoad
For students interested in learning Rails, we offer Zero to Rails 3, and other introductory classes available through the EYTP program in different regions, as well as virtually. For existing Rubyists, we are excited to begin teaching a new course, based on the Rails AntiPatterns book by Chad Pytel and Tammer Saleh. The Rails AntiPatterns course will be offered on May 30, in Boston, and again on June 13, in San Francisco. Finally, all of our Training Providers will be able to deliver an expanded version of the Rails for Zombies curriculum, which combines the popular online curriculum, with a more personal, instructor led approach. Check out our new Engine Yard University page for class listings. Through the EYTP program, Engine Yard University will build upon Engine Yard's longstanding commitment to Open Source by creating a friendly, collaborative, and collegial network of teachers and learners. Some of the investments made so far include the development of learning tools that provide students with a full Ruby on Rails stack on the cloud, along with a browser based editor, console, and embedded curriculum. We are also planning to invite our Training Providers, other interested Rubyists, teachers, and curriculum developers, to a regional summit to discuss ways we can improve the overall quality of our work. Borrowing a page from public and private education, this summit will focus on developing a standards based curriculum for both Ruby and Rails. We will hold this meeting in early summer, at a yet to be identified location, as well as virtually. If you are an school teacher, instructor, or work for an organization interested in becoming a Training Partner, pleaseget in touch.

Using the KeepVault Connector to backup Roaming Client Computers

Previously, I covered the basics of Proxure?s KeepVault Online Backup, as well as what you got if you went Pro.  With the release of the RC of KeepVault for, I noticed I didn?t cover the KeepVault Connector, which is a separate add-in for Windows Home Server 2011, and Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials than the original KeepVault add-in.

This add-in allows you to do the incredible.  Back up roaming computers via a ?Sync? while the computer is connected to the Internet, anywhere.  Now I use Windows Live Mesh to sync most of my items between my computers and the cloud, but there are some things that I don?t.  For example, if I?m travelling and I process photos, those don?t get into my Mesh, but I still worry about them.  This solution solves that.

Simply download and install the KeepVault Connector for Mac & PC.  Make sure you choose the WHS/SBS 2011 version, and not the WHS Original.  Once installed, and the dashboard restarted, you?ll notice that KeepVault has an extra tab

KeepVault Connector

This add-in installs into the dashboard and adds a \KeepVault directory to your default website.  It also reads your servername (orange above), your remote access domain name (blue above) and provides an extremely secure recommended password (yellow above).  Simply click the link to Download and install the client setup.  This downloads the client component directly from your server:

KeepVault Client Download

KeepVault Connector Client ApplicationOnce installed, just find the KeepVault Connector in the start menu, or in your system tray, and load up this fancy little ?Sync? application and click the Add Folder button.  This will allow you to to pick a local folder on your client computer which will perform the backup.

For me I created a ?backup to home server? folder as a test, and dropped a few files in there.  While I?m local on the network, the backups are SUPER quick, but away from the network they?ll be throttled by my connection speed back to my server.

You can also choose to modify the backup locally only, or over the Internet.  Given that the built in Client Backup functionality runs when you?re local, you might not use this.  However, it?s some nice flexibility if you use a tethered 3G connectivity, so you can choose to sync when you?re on wi-fi and by default not always.  Speaking of Sync, you?ll notice at the very bottom you can click the hyper-link to work offline, so if you end up tethering your PC to your cell phone and then dumping a ton of pictures in there, you can click that and work offline, and prevent the backup from happening over your 3G connection, if you valued cost of data over loss of data.  :o)

If I had a gripe with this system, it?s only that the KeepVault connector isn?t also available to launch directly from Launchpad via the Add-ins area.  As you can see AWIECO does take advantage of this, it?d be great to see ?KeepVault Connector? in here:

Launchpad with Add-ins

Add ins

I?ve heard on a few occasions that the road warrior doesn?t like the stop in the office to do a much needed backup, perhaps this solution can help.  Backups can be done from home, or coffee shops, or in my case, at work to my home!

CloudBerry Backup, a piece of software I have reviewed for Windows Home Server v1, has recently (February) released an update to support both the new Windows Home Server 2011, as well as the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials.

CloudBerry Online Backup for SBS 2011 Essentials

For the most part, I liked CloudBerry, their software is a pay once, and according to their website, upgrade to the WHS 2011 version for free.

The biggest problems I had with CloudBerry were

  1. The complexity of setting up the Amazon S3 account
  2. The cost of using Amazon S3

So really I think if you want to use Amazon S3 as your back-end, it?s a great solution.

You can pick up their Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Release Candidate, or their Windows Home Server 2011 Essentials Release Candidate.

I haven?t tried this version yet, but I?m surprised there is a price difference between SBS and WHS Versions.  The UI looks identical, and I know that the SDK they use to develop their version is identical.  The costing is called out on this webpage, but it really doesn?t say what Small Businesses are getting on top of the WHS product for a pretty hefty difference in price.

If anyone knows, drop it in the comments below.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 and Interaction with Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

I know I have talked before about Windows MultiPoint Server 2011, and how it can help your Small Business with thin clients, old clients, seasonal employees and even reducing the number of machines in the office by getting one nice one.

I wanted to touch on this again, now that the Release Candidate of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials is available. With this release of SBS 2011 Essentials, a new level of integration between MultiPoint 2011 Premium and SBS 2011 Essentials is here. MultiPoint has some features that just work well with SBS, and vice versa. Let?s take a look at those so you know what to expect. You are required to get MultiPoint 2011 Premium for these features to work as that's the version that allows domain join.

1. MultiPoint Server Premium can Join the SBS 2011 Essentials Server

That?s right, MultiPoint can go straight to http://server/connect and join just as if it was a client computer. As the MultiPoint administrator on one of the local sessions, simply browse to the server /connect page and click the Join this Windows PC. The join is pretty seamless, which then brings us to the next point?

2. Domain users can log into the MultiPoint 2011 Premium Server

Once domain joined, the MultiPoint server allows all domain users to log in as standard users to the server. This includes local sessions or remote TS sessions. This can essentially render the Users tab of MultiPoint useless to you, but now you can manage your users from inside the Small Business Server 2011 dashboard.

3. MultiPoint Server shows up in the SBS 2011 Essentials Server Dashboard

Yep, you can see your MultiPoint server in the dashboard, just along with your other clients, it appears online or offline depending on the state of the server.

MultiPoint Server in the SBS 2011 Console

This now brings me to my next point, because you probably saw that the backup status of this MultiPoint server is Successful

4. MultiPoint 2011 is backed up by SBS 2011 Essentials

Yep, as if it?s a client computer, the MultiPoint 2011 Server is backed up as if it?s a client computer. In fact, it?s the *only* server operating system that can be backed up by the SBS 2011 Essentials backup engine.

MultiPoint backup

5. MultiPoint appears in the Remote Web Access of SBS 2011 Essentials

Last but not least, the MultiPoint 2011 server automatically appears in the Remote Web Access for SBS 2011 Essentials, and users can connect directly to this server remotely.

MultiPoint in RWA

Using the SBS 2011 Essentials dashboard, you can control which users have access to this computer simply on their user properties object

User Properties

There you have it. As mentioned before, MultiPoint is a TS-in-App-Sharing server on steroids. You can use local settings via USB, or remote sessions using either thin clients, remote computers, or just local computers you don?t want to upgrade to Windows 7, but still have this experience. The more users you configure to connect, the better the hardware you should configure.

While this is all content that applies to RTM, currently SBS 2011 and MultiPoint 2011 are in Beta.

How To Install Windows Home Server 2011 on your MediaSmart or DataVault Hardware

Well, I?m positive this is something that HP will not support, so don?t even think of calling them if you go down this road, but I figured it?d be fun if you wanted to continue to use the same hardware. I took this opportunity to get an HP ProLiant MicroServer, plus it does at least RAID1 (Mirror) where the MediaSmart or DataVault servers cannot do any form of RAID. But it?s still a cute little form factor. Also, I think the MicroServer is quieter than the MediaSmart (at least the ex475 that I had)

Additionally you?ll have to use the EX490/495 or DataVault as Vail requires at least 2GB of RAM, which aren?t in earlier models of the MediaSmart servers (e.g. EX470/475). So if you?ve got the grey top, you?ve got a lot more work to do that isn?t covered here. (I hear it works on the ex48x, but I only tried the ex49x)

Creating the Bootable Thumb Drive

SanDisk DataTraveler 8GB

The first step here will be to prepare your media, usually on your client computer. The image is slightly bigger than 4GB, so I had to step up to an 8GB thumb drive. I?m actually using the Data Traveller by Kingston. First you?ll need to format it and make it bootable. I already have instructions on how to do that here. Next up you?ll have to copy the Windows Home Server 2011 DVD to the root of the disk. This makes the Thumb drive and the DVD look identical in Windows Explorer. You?re almost there. As you probably know, the MediaSmart or DataVault server doesn?t have a video input, so you?re going to need to do the install via an ?unattend file?. The unattend file is called cfg.ini, and needs to also be in the root of the thumbdrive with the WHS 2011 DVD image on it.

Inside the cfg.ini, you?ll need to answer questions, so design your file like this:

[WinPE] InstallSKU=SERVERHOMEPREMIUM ConfigDisk=1 CheckReqs=0 WindowsPartitionSize=61440 [InitialConfiguration] AcceptEula=true ServerName=VAILSERVER PlainTextPassword=Passw0rd PasswordHint=some password hint Settings=All

Where VAILSERVER is the name of the server, Passw0rd is the server password and some password hint is the hint to remind you of what you set your password to.

Erasing the Primary OS Hard Drive

In order to have the MediaSmart or DataVault boot off the Thumb Drive for installation, you?ll need to completely erase the primary hard drive (the lowest one in the MediaSmart/DataVault server).

Remove the drive from the server and attach it to another PC (I used Windows 7) and then erase the primary partition. When you?re finished, place the drive back into the MediaSmart or DataVault server.

Installing Windows Home Server 2011

HP MediaSmart ServerThis is where the fun starts. Installation without feedback. Please note that this will erase the ENTIRE primary hard disk on your server, so make sure you have a backup of ALL your data, and customization. While you can most likely do a factory reset to bring back WHS v1 and get access to your data on other disks in the system, I don?t cover that detail on this blog, and don?t recommend taking that sort of risk with your data.

I recommend putting the box up on the desk where you can see the Health LED light and also listen to the hard drive(s). So let?s get started:

  1. Connect your MediaSmart or DataVault server to power, and network.

  2. Insert the USB drive into the bottom-rear USB port and disconnect all other USB devices. It needs to be the bottom-rear USB port.

  3. Power on the server. The server should automatically boot off the USB key, format the drive and install all of the operating system files. The health LED will blink the aqua through the BIOS bootup, then aqua/red during the OS installation. The OS installation takes ~ 8-10 minutes. You should hear the hard drives during this phase. I also constantly refreshed my router DHCP list so I could see when the server obtained an IP address.

    1. While the Answer file should take you all the way through setup, once you find your server get?s an IP address you can browse to http://<ip address> and you should see a webpage for WHS 2011 to download and run the wizard. I?d just leave it use the answer file, but if you left out the [Initial Configuration] piece out of the answer file above, you could also just run setup from here.

  4. The installation of the rest of the server took ~20-25 minutes for me. The LED light stopped blinking aqua/red and just went back to blinking aqua when it was done. Also, when I went to http://<ip address>, I saw the remote access site being turned off: Remote Access Disabled

  5. At this point I used ?MSTSC? or Remote Desktop to connect to the server. clicking Start, then Run, and typing in MSTSC /V VAILSERVER, or whatever name you called it in the file above. When you log in using the VAILSERVER\Administrator, and the password you created in the cfg.ini file, you?ll see that the server is indeed setup and ready to roll: Your Server is now ready to use

I wouldn?t say the MediaSmart or DataVault server is as fast as my MicroServer, and it certainly is lacking 4GB of RAM, but it runs reasonably well:

Windows Task Manager

That?s all there is to it. Now just plug in your USB Backup drive, and set it up however you like.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure you choose a name for your server that doesn?t conflict with another name on the network, this will halt the unattended configuration

  • Make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM, this will halt the unattended configuration.

  • Make sure you clean the system hard drive, otherwise it won?t boot to the USB disk.

Kudos to MediaSmartServer.Net

While I did these instructions myself, I was struggling at the location of having to format the hard drive, so kudos to the folks over at MediaSmartServer.net for the help here. Their steps helped get me over that hump, although I noticed that their cfg.ini file is a beta version, which has since been updated. My cfg.ini file is the correct one for the RC2 and RTM releases of Windows Home Server 2011. They also go into details about using the EX47x series that I don?t cover here.

Installing Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

I targeted this post to Windows Home Server, as it?s more likely to have enthusiasts in the consumer space try this than in the business space. Businesses typically want the hardware RAID functionality that the DataVault or MediaSmart doesn?t offer. Additionally, being able to see what?s going on in a hardware failure is critical to a business, so the lack of a video card of a headless device is a show-stopper. HOWEVER, if you?re the type that wants to run SBS in your house, or you want to take this risk on to leverage this hardware, the same steps above work for SBS 2011 Essentials as well. The cfg.ini file is different though as it has more required fields:

[WinPE] InstallSKU=SERVERHOMEPREMIUM ConfigDisk=1 CheckReqs=0 WindowsPartitionSize=61440 [InitialConfiguration] AcceptEula=true CompanyName=Some Company Name ServerName=AURORASERVER NetbiosName=COMPANY DNSName=COMPANY.local UserName=Admin PlainTextPassword=Passw0rd StdUserName=SomeUser StdUserPlainTextPassword=Passw0rd Settings=All

You?ll want to replace the bold items above with your own. Also, you?ll notice that you can use the cfg.ini file to change the .local of your internal domain name to whatever you want. We recommend .local, or .lan, or .internal work well too. DO NOT choose the same DNS name that you plan on using for your Remote Web Access website. For example, if you plan to use remote.contoso.com as your URL, do not use contoso.com as your DNS name for your internal network. Contoso.lan or Contoso.local is recommended. Or, while I haven?t tested this with SBS 2011 Essentials, I think you can choose internal.contoso.com if you absolutely must. Just don?t make them the same.
